Two California high school students severed their fingers Monday in a game of tug-of-war during Spirit Week, The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

The students were only identified as a female senior soccer player and a male football player, the report said. They attended El Monte Union High School, which is East of Los Angeles.

The students were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where surgeons tried to re-attach the fingers, the report said. It is unclear how many fingers were severed. KTLA reported that each student lost at least one finger.
