A monthlong push to revive expired jobless benefits appears to have dim chances of advancing in the Senate anytime soon.
Barring a last-minute breakthrough between centrist Republicans and Democratic leadership, a three-month restoration of long-term unemployment benefits will likely stall again on the Senate floor Thursday as the parties spar over amendments that should be attached to the bill. The chamber has haggled for weeks over the jobless aid bill, blocking an initial version of the legislation in January.
"I'm sorry to say that it appears Senate Republicans appear poised to filibuster this important legislation a second time, despite the fact that we have compromised on every one of their demands," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
