Protests in Newark After Three Teenagers Shot; Mayoral Candidates Want More Police, Federal Funding

After a series of shootings left three Newark teenagers dead last week, dozens of residents and city officials took to the streets Monday calling for new anti-gang policies and federal funding to beat back a surge in crime that has caused Newark homicides to rise for the fourth straight year.

Former Assistant Attorney General Shavar Jeffries, South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka and North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos— three of the four men vying to become Newark's mayor in 2014 — separately called for action Monday after the deaths of 18-year-old Reginald Terry,15-year-old Kasson Morman and 13-year-old Zainee Hailey.
