Obamacare Coverage to Be Cut Off for Those Who Can't Prove Citizenship

The Obama administration said Tuesday it would cut off health insurance coverage for up to 310,000 people who signed up for plans through the troubled HealthCare.gov system unless those people provide documents in the next few weeks to verify they are U.S. citizens or legal residents.

The federal agency in charge of implementing the main parts of the 2010 Affordable Care Act said it was giving people until Sept. 5 to send in additional information that could confirm that they are in the U.S. legally, a condition of using the law's new online insurance exchanges to obtain coverage. Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which administers the law, said they would tell insurers to terminate health policies for people who don't respond, starting Sept. 30.
