Obama Condemns Recent Violence in Egypt

President Barack Obama Thursday "strongly condemned" the Egyptian military's crackdown on supporters of the deposed president, Mohamed Morsi.

The U.S. is cancelling joint military exercises planned with Egypt for next month, Obama said from Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where he's vacationing with his family. He emphasized America's "longstanding partnership" with Egypt, but "the cycle of violence and escalation needs to stop."

The president added that warring Egyptian factions should not blamed the U.S. and the West for its problems. "Democratic transitions are measure not in months, or even in years, but sometimes in generations."
