NYC Trash Facility Faces Lawsuit

An Upper East Side community group is suing the city to stop it from constructing a giant industrial trash facility on its waterfront.

The Army Corps of Engineers issued a permit in July, allowing the city to move forward with the much-maligned project, a two-acre, 10-story waste marine transfer station that would handle more than 5,200 tons of garbage each day.

The city proposes building the station on the site of a defunct facility at the East River and 91st Street.

In the federal lawsuit, plaintiffs Residents for Sane Trash Solutions say the issuance of the permit violates the federal Clean Water Act.
