NYC Teachers Revolt Against Union Over Police Protest

Teachers outraged by the United Federation of Teachers' decision to participate in an Eric Garner protest march are urging union members to show their support for the police by wearing NYPD shirts on the first day of school.

The call to action, which is circulating on Facebook and Twitter, comes on the heels of an online petition posted by teachers demanding the resignation of UFT president Michael Mulgrew over the union's decision to participate in a march Saturday being led by the Rev. Al Sharpton to protest Garner's death.

The petition, dubbed "Michael Mulgrew Resign Now," has already garnered more than 500 signatures of support in its first 24 hours. It was started by Diane Morton-Gattullo, a paraprofessional at PS 29 in Castleton Corners, who said union members were "blindsided" by the UFT's decision.
