As might be imagined after the shooting rampage in 2013 in which mentally ill contract worker Aaron Alexis killed 12 people at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., the alert this morning that an active shooter might again roaming the facility was alarming. The good news is that the law enforcement has now declared it a false alarm; no shooting happened today.

For more background on mass shooting trends in the United States, go to Reason.com to read the superb article "The Truth About Mass Public Shootings" by Dr. Grant Duwe, the director of research and evaluation for the Minnesota Department of Corrections and the author of Mass Murder in the United States: A History.

Also relevant to how Americans should react to possible terrorist attacks is my article today, "Don't Be Terrorized by Your Government This Fourth of July."
