New York Assemblyman Convicted of Federal Bribery Charges

New York state Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. was found guilty Thursday of soliciting more than $250,000 from favor-seeking businessmen who turned out to be undercover federal agents.

Following a monthlong trial in Brooklyn federal court, a jury convicted Mr. Boyland of 21 counts, including extortion conspiracy, bribery, honest services fraud, theft and mail fraud.

As the jury foreman stood to read the verdict, Mr. Boyland closed his eyes an pressed his forehead into his hands. After the first guilty verdict was read, Mr. Boyland covered his face, appeared to wipe at tears, then covered his face again.
