The Justice Department has brought new charges against a Libyan militant accused in the 2012 Benghazi attacks, including counts that carry the death penalty.
The new 18-count superseding indictment announced Tuesday adds multiple charges of murder against Ahmed Abu Khattala.
Abu Khattala was captured in June by U.S. special forces and transported to the United States aboard a Navy boat. He is awaiting trial in Washington.
An earlier indictment that served as a placeholder charged him with conspiring to provide support to terrorists. The new indictment had been expected.
