Egypt's Islamists opened a new front in their campaign against the country's military-led regime on Tuesday after the arrest of the Muslim Brotherhood's supreme guide, Mohammed Badie.

They demanded a boycott of regime-supporting media and businesses and said they would shun products of countries that backed the new authorities – a reference to Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Mr Badie was discovered in an apartment in north-west Cairo and arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The authorities said they had received a tip-off, and pictures showing Mr Badie sitting disconsolately on a sofa before he was taken away were released to the media.
