Linux Rolls Out First OS for Smartphones

The new launch marks the first time that the most popular version of the open-source Linux operating system has been available on smartphones, and aims to take advantage of new hardware to turn a phone into a computing hub when connected to a keyboard and monitor.

Although previous handsets, such as Motorola's Atrix, have attempted to turn mobiles into computers with laptop docks, the Ubuntu launch is the first to offer a single operating system that can run across phone, computer and connected TVs. It will run on top of the range superphones, such as Google's Nexus devices, as well as featurephones.
