European Commission Proposes Temporary Ban on Cloning Animals For Food

The European Union will not ban or require labels for meat and milk from the offspring of cloned animals, a decision that opens the door for the unrestricted sale of such food in Britain.

The European Commission has proposed a "temporary ban" on animal cloning for food in the EU but will not take measures to restrict meat or milk from cows, sheep or pigs that are the descendants of cloned stud animals in the United States or Latin America.

"There is no indication that differences exist in terms of food safety between food products from healthy cattle and pig clones and their off-spring, compared with those from healthy conventionally-bred animals," said the commission.
