Diplomats Head to Cairo to Try to Restore Peace

The Egypt military's refusal to end its crackdown on demonstrators supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and leaders ousted from power may hinder international efforts aimed at resolving the crisis this week.

Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and his deputy Khairat el-Shater will face trial at the end of the month for inciting violence that killed eight people outside the movement's Cairo headquarters on June 30, the same day millions rose up across Egypt against former president Mohammed Morsi.

"This is part of the behavior and policy of the state against the Brotherhood," said Khalil Al-Anani, an expert on Islamist movements and Egyptian politics who is currently in Cairo.
