Canadian Supreme Court Says Anti-Gay Leaflets Are Hate Speech

The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld a key pillar of Canada's hate-speech laws and has found that flyers distributed by a Saskatchewan anti-gay activist constituted hate speech.

However, in a 6-0 decision, the Supreme Court reined in the original ruling by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Tribunal that ordered Weyburn man Bill Whatcott to pay $17,500 to people who complained about four flyers he distributed in the province in 2001 and 2002 and banned him from distributing similar material.H/TPierre Honeyman
