Bangladesh executed a top leader of the country's biggest Islamic party after he lost an appeal to review his death sentence for war crimes that took place four decades ago, local media reported.

Abdul Quader Mollah, assistant secretary-general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail, private television station Channel 24 reported late yesterday, without citing anyone. The Supreme Court sentenced him to death on Sept. 17 after the government had appealed a life sentence.
