(CNN) — Terrorist acts and other violence killed at least 1,000 people and injured 1,800 in Iraq in January, a senior Iraqi Interior Ministry official said Friday.
Many parts of Iraq have been engulfed in sectarian and political violence for months, but the situation has been exacerbated by recent fighting in Iraq's western Anbar province.
Violence erupted in Anbar around the beginning of the year with Iraqi security forces, Sunni tribesmen and al-Qaeda-linked groups battling for control of the cities of Falluja and Ramadi.
